What happens if major decisions need to be made during the caretaker period? If the Government needs to make a major decision while in the caretaker period – one that would bind a future government – the relevant minister usually consults with their Opposition counterpart. If the decision is not urgent, the Government would most likely defer negotiations, or adopt ‘observer’ status until the end of the caretaker period. Australia’s national statement to the United Nations delivered by Padma Raman PSM, Executive Director of the Office for Women at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women this month. The statement highlighted Australia’s longstanding architecture for supporting gender equality – including the Office for Women, the Sex Discrimination Act and the Office of the Sex Discrimination Commissioner. It also acknowledged Australia’s record investments to end gender-based violence, and the power of recent reforms including positioning gender equality as a central objective of all policy decisions, making childcare more accessible, and the expansion of Australia’s Paid Parental Leave scheme. Throughout the 11-day session held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, the importance of global cooperation and continuing efforts in support of gender equality came through in many discussions and presentations.
