Congratulations to our friends at Curtin University and the The University of British Columbia for winning the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Rio Tinto's 2025 Supplier Recognition Awards. The 'Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure Program' meets an important need and will help address the global mine closure and transition challenge.
A special congratulations to Curtin University and University of British Columbia - Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining (UBC - BRIMM), winners of the Environmental Sustainability Award in Rio Tinto’s 2025 Supplier Recognition Awards. Their collaboration and partnership with Rio Tinto on the “Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure Program” is reshaping how the resources sector prepares for and executes responsible mine closure. The Gala Event was attended by more than 800 people including Western Australia’s Premier - Roger Cook, Government Officials, Traditional Owners, Joint Venture Partners, Suppliers, and Rio Tinto leaders and teams. The global online Program is designed for multidisciplinary teams working within the resources sector. Curtin and UBC-BRIMM are addressing not only Rio Tinto’s but the resources sector’s current and future workforce needs through mine closure education. The Program challenges thinking on how we should operate differently by keeping the end in mind throughout the life of our assets. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners at Curtin University, UBC-BRIMM, Ernst & Young, and the Rio Tinto Closure Leadership, Subject Matter Experts, Project teams, and our dedicated learners. Your commitment and support have been instrumental in driving the success of this Program and our partnership, across the globe. This award is a celebration and recognition of your passion and purpose. Congratulations to all our winners and finalists! Thank you to all our Rio Tinto suppliers for your ongoing support and valued partnership which are essential to our continued success. Realising the greatest benefits from the Circular Economy depends on maximising value from development of Australia’s minerals resources – before, during and after operations. Our submission to the Productivity Commission's Interim Report on the Circular Economy makes four overarching recommendations to unlock the full potential of the post-mine land, infrastructure and waste use.
