“To young people: speak up. Don’t give up. To decision-makers: open your eyes. Turn on your listening ears. Give us a chance.” In the latest Parity magazine – launched yesterday! – Jae, a member of Yfoundations Youth Homelessness Representative Council has this clear message for readers. To develop a unified, trauma-informed approach to youth homelessness, we need to listen to young people who’ve been there. If you want to hear from more brilliant young people like Jae, join us at the #VictorianYouthHomelessnessAssembly, April 29-30. Young people themselves will be central to the conversations we will have. Registrations are closing on Tuesday! Applications for the third round of the Community and Social Services Graduate Program (CASS-GP) are opening soon. We know staff retention is a challenge in the homelessness sector. This program is a fantastic opportunity for SHS organisations to strengthen workplace culture and give staff the professional development needed to become highly skilled, passionate and long-serving contributors. Open to Victorian social housing and homelessness services employers, the 12-month program gives your organisation access to: - Structured learning and development activities to improve retention of workers in their early years of employment - Funding to share in the cost of investing in early career workers - Supported recruitment through the Graduate Resource Centre, providing access to qualified graduates looking to start their career. Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) and Victorian Department of Families, Fairness & Housing are co-hosting a session to share more info about the program, on Tuesday 6 May. If your organisation is interested, you can register here: https://lnkd.in/dkqpGe8a #DFFH #VCOSS #SocialServices #SHSopportunity

Okay, we have some bad news and some very exciting news to announce today. The bad news is that, due to circumstances beyond our control, Government House can no longer host the Social Reception for the Victorian Youth Homelessness Assembly. The exciting news is that, now we’ll be holding the Reception back in our fabulous main Assembly venue at Q Events in the CBD, we’re using this opportunity to hold an ART EXHIBITION! “Through My Eyes” is an exhibition of art by young people with lived experience of homelessness, and it will be the centrepiece of the Assembly’s Social Reception. We’ve already seen a few pieces for the show and they are stunning. And we encourage any young people you’re working with to contribute any art they’d like to share too! If you’re interested in participating, here’s all you need to know: - artists can contribute visual art or poetry - artworks can be on any theme or topic. They do not have to address homelessness - artworks do not need to be new or created specifically for the exhibition - artists can submit original hardcopies, or digital files which CHP will print for the exhibition - all artists in the exhibition will receive a $30 giftcard - artists are also welcome to make their work available for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the artist. To guarantee privacy, CHP will handle invoicing to buyers, and then assist artists to invoice us for the full amount. - all participating artists will be invited to attend the Social Reception to be part of the exhibition! The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Thursday 24 April. Email them to lucas@chp.org.au or drop off hardcopies to CHP’s office at 2 Stanley Street Collingwood (open 9-5, Tuesdays – Thursdays). If you have any questions, email Lucas at lucas@chp.org.au

"I was embarrassed. I didn't want people to know. It was almost like I would do anything to make sure I did not present as homeless." An innovative model in Albury, NSW is helping young people like Ella access crucial wraparound support. Dr David Mackenzie of Upstream Australia says it's halved the number of at-risk young people in the regional city. Hear more from Dr Mackenzie in the upcoming youth homelessness edition of Parity magazine, launching next Wednesday. Plus, he'll be sharing more insights on prevention at the #VictorianYouthHomelessnessAssembly on 29 April.
