Supporting all Queenslanders impacted by cancer.

About us

We are Queensland's leading cancer charity working across every aspect of every cancer. Every day, we support families affected by cancer when they need it most, speak out on behalf of the community on cancer issues, empower people to reduce their cancer risk, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer. Thousands of Queenslanders donate and volunteer for us each day, helping us work towards a cancer-free future. We were established in 1961 as the Queensland Cancer Fund, in response to an increasing need for cancer-related services across the state. Today, Cancer Council Queensland employs over 250 staff statewide, and relies on support from more than 2,500 registered volunteers. We have offices in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Maroochydore, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast. Cancer Council Queensland is a member of Cancer Council Australia and is affiliated with the International Union Against Cancer (UICC).

Updates

  • When Cairns local Ange was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, everything changed. Too unwell to drive herself to treatment, she had to rely on others just to get to appointments. That’s where our Transport to Treatment service stepped in. Thanks to this service, Ange doesn’t have to burden her loved ones, she gets to spend quality time with her family instead of relying on them for lifts. And along the way, the volunteer drivers have become more than just a helping hand, they’ve become friends. For regional and remote Queenslanders like Ange, this service is vital. It removes a major barrier to treatment and is just one way we offer wraparound support from the moment someone is diagnosed. In Far North Queensland, none of this would be possible without the incredible support of Brothers Cairns. For the past five years, they’ve backed their community wholeheartedly, last year alone, helping us deliver nearly 5,000 trips for locals needing transport to treatment. A heartfelt thank you to Brothers Leagues Club for standing by people with cancer when it matters most. • We are delighted to be partnering with MooGoo Skin Care and grantsofaustralia to provide women staying at one of our Support Hubs with a specially curated care pack. The packs form an integral part of the wraparound support we provide and mean that women from remote and regional communities can focus on themselves and their health. Each pack contains items formulated especially for those going through chemotherapy and radiation, when your skin is incredibly sensitive. The packs can be found at our 5 Support Hubs across Queensland and are just one of the ways we try to make them feel like a home away from home. • We are proud to share the Australian Cancer Atlas 2.0 took home Top Honours at the prestigious Oceania Geospatial Excellence Awards. The project, which was developed in partnership with QUT Centre for Data Science was recognised through the Oceania Technical Excellence Award and J. K. Barrie Award for Overall Excellence at a ceremony in Brisbane on Monday night. The Australian Cancer Atlas 2.0 shows visually how small areas across the country are faring when it comes to cancer diagnosis rates, participation in national cancer screening programs, and five-year cancer survival. It is a vital tool for us to better understand cancer disparities and where our research and work is needed most. Professor Peter Baade, who led the project, said: “The Australian Cancer Atlas is already making a real difference - it's helping researchers, health services, and policymakers identify cancer disparities across Australia, and guide research priorities. It has become a powerful tool for public health planning and community engagement." • We are thrilled to welcome Mena Waller as Cancer Council Queensland’s new Chief Operating Officer – a pivotal appointment as we continue to drive meaningful change in cancer research, prevention, support and advocacy across our state. Mena brings an exceptional depth of experience in health policy reform, human resource management, executive leadership, and community initiatives. Her career spans frontline clinical roles, government, not-for-profit, and Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, working across health, education, and community sectors. Mena was raised in Central Queensland and is a proud descendant of the Walman Yawuru people in the Kimberley, Western Australia. She has lived and worked in discrete communities and has first-hand insight into the challenges of health service accessibility, effectiveness, and prevention and is deeply committed to achieving health equity - particularly for regional and remote communities and First Nations people. "I’m excited about the opportunity and impact I can make at Cancer Council Queensland and feel strongly connected with our commitment to health equity. I believe in designing systems that are holistic and person-centred, with preventive strategies that are accessible and support overall wellbeing – addressing barriers experienced by people and communities hardest to reach." Mena’s leadership marks a significant step forward for Cancer Council Queensland, reinforcing our commitment to inclusive, community-driven health solutions. Her expertise and passion will be instrumental in shaping a future where every Queenslander, regardless of location or background, has access to the cancer care and prevention they deserve. Please join us in warmly welcoming Mena to Cancer Council Queensland! #NavigatingCancerTogether #ResearchPreventSupport
