Australia’s leading research data infrastructure facility.
About us
At the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), we drive delivery of world-class national digital research infrastructure that gives Australian researchers competitive advantage through data and supports research impact. The ARDC is Australia’s leading facility for research data infrastructure. We facilitate access to research data sets and tools from academia, industry and government for all Australian researchers. We run programs and form partnerships that ensure Australian researchers are internationally competitive through having access to high-quality data assets, platforms, infrastructure, policies, people and training to transform our lives. Solving society’s greatest challenges takes the collective efforts of society. Through our collaborations and partnerships — national and international — we are ensuring that valuable data and software assets are developed, made accessible and sustained for everyone. The ARDC is enabled by the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS)

Researchers don’t always speak the same language. 💬 Often, different terminology is used to describe the same data. This makes comparing, interpreting and integrating data challenging. Defined vocabularies are sets of standardised terms that ensure the research community describes and understands data in the same way. Research Vocabularies Australia is a national vocabulary service provided by the ARDC that brings together standard vocabularies across the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities to make this possible. Why use Research Vocabularies Australia? 📖 If you’re a researcher, you can use Research Vocabularies Australia to find and access domain-specific vocabularies agreed upon by the research community. Using a research vocabulary enables other researchers to evaluate whether your data is relevant to their work. It also ensures your data is findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) to maximise its impact. “Water temperature is a good example,” said Dr Natalia Atkins, who manages vocabularies for the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). “Some people call it ‘temperature of the water body’, others call it ‘sea temperature,’ then there’s ‘sea surface temperature’ or ‘SST’. If you don’t mark things up in a systematic way, you can never be sure it’s the same [thing].” How do I get started? 💡 Head to Research Vocabularies Australia to browse, search, access or publish vocabularies: bit.ly/ardcrva #research #data #vocabulary #FAIRdata
