Our President Matt Burnett spoke to The Australian this week about the $3.5 billion Australia's 537 councils are seeking this federal election. It is formula-based, non-competitive funding programs - similar to the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which the Coalition promised today to reinstate if elected - that provide the best results for our communities. BREAKING NEWS: The Coalition has pledged to reinstate the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program if elected on 3 May. This $1 billion commitment would include $500 million for all councils to provide community infrastructure (meeting ALGA’s pre-election ask), as well as an additional $500 million for regional roads. ALGA President Mayor Matt Burnett said: “We are thrilled that the Coalition has recognised the value of investing in our communities and committed to bringing back the Local Roads and Community infrastructure Program at $1 billion per year if they form government.” “Reinstating the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program will support every council, and more importantly, provide tangible benefits to every Australian community. Today's Coalition announcement for a proposed Regional Australia Future Fund is a great opportunity to deliver long-term funding for #regional and rural #councils. But the fund must include non-competitive, formula-based funding streams. President Matt Burnett said: “It’s fantastic to see the Coalition hear our calls for increased funding that recognises the extraordinary pressures on our regional, rural and remote councils. “This election, we are calling for $3.5 billion per year in formula-based funding to address the financial stressors on councils to meet modern community needs,” Mayor Burnett said. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d7XC2Ymq We want to see a significant increase in funding for #localgovernment, including: > $1.1 billion per year for enabling infrastructure to unlock housing supply, > $500 million per year for community infrastructure, > $600 million per year for safer local roads, > $900 million per year for increased local government emergency management capability and capacity, and > $400 million per year for climate adaptation. We welcome the Coalition’s promise to reinstate the 80:20 federal funding split for #road projects in #regional and #remote Australia. This funding commitment would support regional and rural roads, which are vital to connecting our #communities. Tragically, around half of all road fatalities occur on #localgovernment roads, and ALGA is calling for a $600 million per year safer roads fund – with $500 million for infrastructure improvements and $100 million for road safety programs – to enable #councils to play a more effective role in reducing road deaths. A fantastic new initiative from Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) on a very important issue
It's time to 'Lift the Tone'! 📢 Local government representatives and council staff are facing increasing abuse, and it's time for change. “This behaviour has serious impacts on both mental and physical health, not only for elected representatives but also for their families," said LGAT Vice President Paula Wriedt. Today we launched a campaign to encourage more respectful public debate. Join us: Sign the pledge and help create a strong and united community! https://lnkd.in/gzWqKRth 📸 LGAT Vice President Paula Wriedt, MBA, Minister for Local Government Kerry Vincent and Dr Emma Richardson from Well Minds Work.
