Repatriation Commissioner and Australian Army veteran Kahlil Fegan knows the toll that a life in the service can take on families. The former Battalion Commander was deployed multiple times to war zones, including Afghanistan and Iraq, which meant being away from his family for long periods of time. Concerned about his son during one of these deployments, he reached out to Open Arms. ‘My son was having some problems and I was deeply concerned because I was constantly away. I’d been away for years of his life. Open Arms talked to me about a lot of support options and it was so reassuring.’ As Commissioner, Kahlil sees his main priorities as supporting veterans and the individuals and organisations who support them. ‘We owe so much to those who have dedicated their lives to the service of our nation. And for me, there is no greater calling than to serve and support them.’ The son of a Vietnam War veteran who himself served for more than 34 years, Kahlil encourages veterans to reach out for help if they need it. ‘The ADF provides qualities and values that you have for life. At times, sacrifice can also mean you are affected physically and mentally. 'There are so many support options out there to help you through the difficult times.’ We provide military-aware and trauma informed care to the veteran community, current serving ADF personnel and their immediate families. Call us 24/7. ☎️ 1800 011 046
