  • 👨🚀Why send humans to space when we have so many problems on Earth? 🌍 It’s a fair question: human spaceflight is complex and can cost $ millions per mission. But it’s also one of humanity’s greatest drivers of innovation, resilience, and global cooperation.   64 years ago, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to fly into space. On this International Day of #HumanSpaceflight, we are celebrating crewed missions to orbit (and beyond 🌙), but also the impact of those missions here on Earth.   ⚕️ Advancing science and medicine ☕ Developing everyday spinoffs like memory foam and thermal flasks 🌐 Fostering international collaboration through bodies like #COPUOS   Human spaceflight inspires us to reach higher and brings tangible benefits back down to Earth.   👇 Explore our carousel to learn why human spaceflight matters and how #UNOOSA supports safe and sustainable orbits for astronauts and the many critical services that we all rely on.   Find more info here: https://lnkd.in/ex5KAv3

  • 🌌📢 How do you communicate about space to the general public? Here’s our attempt... Space seems far away, but it’s not - it's in your pocket, on your feet, in your closet, and on your desk. From the moment you wake up to when you wind down at night, space technology quietly powers your everyday life. It’s not just satellites and rockets. Think memory foam mattresses, LED lights, cordless vacuum cleaners, and even your thermal flask. Many of these innovations began as solutions for crewed space missions before becoming an essential parts of your daily routine. 🌦️ Checking the weather 📍 Using a navigation app 📸 Sharing a selfie 💳 Making a contactless payment 🎧 Wearing noise-cancelling headphones These everyday services and technologies all rely on the safe and sustainable use of space. This is why the work of #UNOOSA and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS2025) impacts all of us. 📽️ Watch our latest video to see just how deeply space is woven into the fabric of your day: 📅 Stay tuned for 12 April, where we will be posting more on International #HumanSpaceflightDay United Nations

  • Want to build your space economy? Not sure how?  On 2-3 April #UNOOSA supported the organisation of the Space Industry Workshop in São Paulo 🇧🇷, in partnership with Agência Espacial Brasileira and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This event gathered leaders from the space industry and beyond to explore how commercialisation, international collaboration, and cross-sector integration in the space industry can drive economic growth and innovation.    📢 Deputy Director Driss El Hadani highlighted how UNOOSA's role as a facilitator, advisor, and capacity builder kickstarts space economies. "𝘜𝘕𝘖𝘖𝘚𝘈 𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘦𝘴. • 🫵♀️ We Need YOU to Advance Gender Equality in Space 🌌 Through the #Space4Women initiative, #UNOOSA is working to shatter glass ceilings and empower women across the global space sector. But to do this, we need you to share your experiences with us. Following last year’s Landmark Study on Gender Equality in the Space Sector, we’re launching a new phase of research focusing on the qualitative aspects of women’s experiences entering and progressing in the space sector. This phase aims to: 1️⃣ Better understand women’s participation in the sector 2️⃣ Support targeted solutions to include more women and girls in STEM and space fields 3️⃣ Build a global baseline to track progress on gender equality One of our biggest challenges is a lack of data, especially in many parts of the world. That’s where YOU come in. 🛰️ Are you a private space organisation? 👉 Share gender representation data from your company. : https://lnkd.in/gqazDHTS ♀️ Are you a woman working in space? 👉 Tell us about your career path and workplace experience. : https://lnkd.in/gr9XqDea All responses are anonymous. 🗓️ Surveys close 1 May 2025   🔹 Learn more about gender representation in the space sector in our Landmark Study on Gender Equality in the Space Sector: https://lnkd.in/dKK4PJQT   🔹 Read our actionable measures to foster a more inclusive space sector in our Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/dm4FAdM3

  • Today is #WorldHealthDay! 🍎 An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but when you need medical attention, space bridges the gap. Space technology is shaping the future of #GlobalHealth in ways we rarely think about:   🛰️ Satellite connectivity brings telemedicine to remote areas, ensuring doctors can reach patients anywhere. 💉 Remote sensing tracks disease outbreaks, improving early warning systems for public health responses. 🧬 Experiments in space advance drug development and could lead to 3D printing organs in microgravity!   🍼 This year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” highlights maternal and newborn health. Space innovations are playing a role here too: Lightweight portable ultrasound devices, originally developed for astronauts, now help expectant mothers in remote areas get critical prenatal care. Health workers with minimal training can use them in the field, and real-time data transmission allows doctors anywhere in the world to provide an informed diagnosis. Earth observation satellites also help map healthcare infrastructure, guiding investments such as maternity wards and neonatal care where they're needed most.   #UNOOSA is working to ensure that space technology benefits everyone, everywhere. Through the Space & Global Health Network, #COPUOS delivers real impact:   1️⃣ The 2025 Workplan has been validated, providing a clear roadmap for the network’s future. 2️⃣ The Space and Global Health Curriculum has been finalised, enhancing global expertise in space-based health solutions. (See the draft here: https://lnkd.in/dk3c7E6K)   🎥👇 Want to learn more about how space contributes to health here on earth? Check out our recent #UNOOSA101 video below!

  • Ever thought about UNOOSA’s Access To Space For All initiative taking you for a spin? 🌀 #UNOOSA partners with European Space Agency - ESA to provide global researchers access to cutting-edge facilities like ESA's Large Diameter Centrifuge (LDC) in Noordwijk 🇳🇱. With the LDC's capability to recreate hypergravity conditions of up to 20 G (4 times stronger than the highest accelerations experienced by a Formula 1 racer 🏎️), researchers from University of San Carlos and Holy Name University 🇵🇭 are making groundbreaking advances in bone implant technology.   🦴 The team is testing how hypergravity affects the growth of bioprinted bone cells. Their research focuses on 3D-printed scaffolds made from carrageenan, a substance extracted from locally farmed red seaweed. While already widely used as a food additive, carrageenan could also be a game-changer for bone implant technology. By exposing bone cells to up to 15 times Earth’s gravity, the team hopes to enhance tissue engineering techniques—an advancement that could also support seaweed farming communities across the Philippines.   🚀 This international collaboration, combining space science, marine resources, and bioengineering, is unlocking new frontiers in medical technology, with exciting potential benefits for both space exploration and life on Earth.   📸 PHOTO CREDIT: University of San Carlos, European Space Agency
