Science is essential – and so is the intersection with policy! 👩🔬🤝🏛️ That’s why we were delighted to welcome Thomas Mühlhans, Director at the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior (Bundesministerium für Inneres (BMI)) to CSH. In a meeting with our Human Migration team, they explored how scientific insights can help deepen our understanding of migration. Key questions on the table included: 🫂 How integrated are migrant populations in host communities? 🏥 How should public services adapt to demographic shifts? 💸 Can migration help sustain aging welfare systems? These are critical questions and, at the Complexity Science Hub, we believe in the power of collaboration between science and policy to create tangible impact, ensuring that society – in all its parts – directly benefits from scientific progress. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dsfMgzfd with Rafael Prieto-Curiel, Ola Megahed, Andrea Vismara, Guillermo Prieto Viertel, Carsten Källner

We Are Europe's Research Center Translating Data into Solutions for a Better World
Info
The Complexity Science Hub (CSH) is Europe’s research center for the study of complex systems. We derive meaning from data from a range of disciplines – economics, medicine, ecology, and the social sciences – as a basis for actionable solutions for a better world. Established in 2015, we have grown to over 70 researchers, driven by the increasing demand to gain a genuine understanding of the networks that underlie society, from healthcare to supply chains. Through our complexity science approaches linking physics, mathematics, and computational modeling with data and network science, we develop the capacity to address today's and tomorrow’s challenges.

🎙️ Spotlight On: Juan José Ochoa Duque Welcome to our interview series with a twist—where researchers pick the questions they want to answer! Today, we’re kicking things off with Juan Ochoa, a new member of the CSH Foundations group. He talks about using physics to understand economies, why Vienna surprised him, and who he'd invite to a research meeting. 🌳 Favorite spot in Vienna? The forest. 📚 Concept everyone should know? A system is more than the sum of its parts. 👉 Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/d_hcMiGi #ComplexityScience #MeetTheResearcher #CSHVienna #SpotlightOn

🌼 Spring is in the air! With sunshine ☀️ and blue skies 🌈, our new courtyard at Palais Springer-Rothschild isn’t just perfect for the Easter bunny on the weekend 🐰—it also checks all the essential boxes for research: daylight 🌞, caffeine ☕, grass under your bare feet 🌱, tranquility 🕊️, and amazing colleagues 👩🔬👨🔬. Rumor has it, even our models are running smoother in the sun. While our courtyard might not solve complex systems, it certainly makes them more enjoyable to discuss 💬.

🎓 One skill builds on another. A new study reveals a nested structure of job skills: In many professions, advanced skills depend on the prior mastery of broader foundational abilities—layer by layer, leading to highly specialized knowledge. This structure has become more pronounced over the past two decades. 🆕 Longer and more complex sequences of skill requirements may make it harder for newcomers and career changers to catch up. 🎒 Those without access to basic education may face barriers to higher-paying jobs. 💸 While the structure itself may not be surprising, its societal consequences are profound—affecting wage inequality and career mobility in today’s labor markets. 📄 Published in Nature Human Behaviour, the study was led by Moh Hosseinioun (Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management), with researchers from the Complexity Science Hub, the Santa Fe Institute, and Harvard Business School. 🔍 CSH researcher Frank Neffke: "The paper is part of an emerging literature that tries to rethink the notion of human capital. To do so, it looks inside jobs and asks how the different skills that a job requires connect to one another to enable us to perform highly complex tasks. This approach changes how we study and think about the labor market, but also career paths and education." ✨ We need your help! We’re collecting personal stories about Chinese names in pinyin for an upcoming art exhibition, created in collaboration with artist Melinda Sipos. Think: the funny, awkward, or meaningful moments of navigating your name in the West. 🌍🎏 📋 Share your story (~7 mins): https://lnkd.in/dQpSMtBE 🖼️ Selected stories will be featured in the exhibition. 🔬 Your input also supports a scientific project aiming to improve name disambiguation and gender inference algorithms — led by Mingrong She (Maastricht University), Liuhuaying Yang (Complexity Science Hub), Ana María Jaramillo Mejía (TU Graz), and Lisette Espín-Noboa (Complexity Science Hub). 💬 If this "Not My Name" visual story resonated with you — this is your chance to be part of it. And feel free to share with friends who might have a story to tell too! NetInCSH
Have you ever wondered why Chinese names sometimes sound awkward to you? 🤔 It’s because of how they’re translated into Pinyin. The process can be confusing — even native Chinese speakers find it tricky to recognize names written this way! I’ve wanted to do this project for two years, and I’m finally sharing the first part with you! This is just the beginning, and we’re working on more research to explore this further. Curious? Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting Will Grimond, our new FRONTIERS Science Journalist in Residence, for his introductory talk at the Complexity Science Hub! Will shared highlights from his work as a data journalist and gave us a glimpse into what he'll be exploring during his five-month residency at CSH: the concept of fairness in #ArtificialIntelligence. He’ll be collaborating with Fariba Karimi’s group to investigate how algorithmic #bias emerges and persists in complex networks. Our researchers were also keen to learn more about how data journalists work—and how scientists and journalists can collaborate to make complex research more accessible and impactful. We’re excited to have Will on board, and we look forward to connecting, sharing expertise, and learning from one another! #FRONTIERS #FrontiersERC #ScienceJournalism #DataJournalism #JournalistInResidence #AI
