Over time, operational challenges emerged in pump mode functionality. In March 2024, as the OEM, ANDRITZ conducted an in-depth site assessment to optimize the operational sequence for full-load pump mode. Overcoming intricate technical hurdles, our expert team meticulously fine-tuned the system. The result? A resounding success! In mid-March, Bhira pumped storage unit’s pump mode operation was rigorously tested, and the machine delivered exceptional performance. 🚀 Exciting progress at the Kembs hydropower plant in France ! 🚀 At the end of 2022, EDF (Electricité de France) asked ANDRITZ to replace the discharge ring on Group 3 at the Kembs site. This hydropower plant, built in 1933 on the Grand Canal of Alsace, plays a key role in the French energy infrastructure on the Rhine River. ANDRITZ was entrusted with the study, manufacturing, demolition, and installation of the new discharge ring. At the end of March, we reached a crucial milestone with the installation of the new discharge ring which was completed successfully and on time. 🗓️ This milestone marks a significant turning point for the continuation of the project. Technical data of the renovated group: • Propeller turbine, 6.82 meters ∅ • Nominal head: 14.2 m • Maximum flow: 245 m3/s • Maximum power: 28 MW 🤝 Thanks to our partners and teams! 🤝 A huge thank you to @EDF for their trust, as well as to our valuable partners: Saert for the demolition, Metalúrgica Gallega for the manufacturing, and of course, the entire project team for their exceptional and incident-free work. Successful model testing of Jaguara, Brazil! The model tests for the modernization of the Jaguara hydropower plant were successfully completed at the laboratory in Linz, Austria. This phase was crucial to validate the design of the Francis runner, guide vanes and stay vanes, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the developed solutions. According to Bruno Cateli, Project Manager, the tests simulated real and critical conditions, evaluating performance, cavitation, and hydraulic behavior, with precision ensured by modern dimensional controls. “Model testing is a critical step in the development of turbine engineering, allowing the simulation and validation of designed solutions by comparing experimental results with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses. The technical team from ENGIE, our contractor, monitored the entire process alongside experts and the CEO of ANDRITZ Hydropower Brazil, Dieter Hopf. Now, we move on to the manufacturing of the components, which will be installed at the plant starting in September 2025, with completion expected by 2028,” he explained. The project now advances to the manufacturing of the validated components, which will be installed in the four units of the Jaguara hydropower plant. The Kidston hydropower pumped storage project is a groundbreaking project aimed at revolutionizing Australia's renewable energy landscape. This 250MW facility is set to play a crucial role in stabilizing the national grid by providing reliable, dispatchable power. As part of the larger Kidston Clean Energy Hub, the project integrates solar power with hydropower pumped storage to create a sustainable and efficient energy solution In a landmark development in the installation process, the rotor assembly has commenced at the Kidston project in North Queensland. This significant milestone marks a crucial step forward in the construction of Australia's first hydropower pumped storage project in over four decades. The early start of the rotor assembly at the laydown yard is a brilliant idea from EPC contractor (MDJH JV) together with ANDRITZ teams and will reduce the overall installation period significantly thus bringing the project one step closer to its goal of delivering clean, reliable energy to the region. ANDRITZ, being responsible for supplying the electromechanical equipment for the project, has been making steady progress in supporting the EPC contractor John Holland and McConnell Dowell Joint Venture in the installation phase.
